Earlier this month, Entrepreneur Magazine named Primrose Schools the no. 1 educational child care franchise for the second year in a row on the highly competitive Entrepreneur 2018 Franchise 500 Ranking. We also moved up to no. 27 overall. Entrepreneur’s ranking formula considers criteria such as:
- Financial Strength & Stability
- Brand Strength
- Size & Growth
- Cost & Fees
I’m extremely proud that our overall standing moved from no. 62 in 2017 to no. 27 this year — a climb of 35 spots. So, how did we do it? It’s all about our team’s commitment to a solid strategy. Let’s take a deeper look into the five components that I believe keep us at the top of the class.
Financial Strength & Stability
There’s never been a stronger demand for early education and care—in fact the child care industry was reportedly worth $48 billion in 2017.
Parents today recognize the critical role that early education plays in a child’s brain and social development. They are not satisfied with the child-care solutions of old, but are increasingly searching for programs that will help prepare their children for a future workplace that we can’t yet even imagine. Primrose has long been recognized as a leader in early education and we remain committed to adapting our schools as brain science reveals more and more about the importance of the first five years. That’s one of many reasons why our schools lead the industry in terms of enrollment rates.
All in all, Primrose Schools is a sustainable and profitable company, and we work intentionally with our Franchise Owners to help them grow a business that yields financial rewards. In fact, Primrose has one of the lowest SBA loan default ratios in the franchising industry, another element that attests to the strength of our business model.
The Primrose brand is a beloved one, and we’re sharing that love with more and more people. Primrose was founded in 1982 and began franchising in 1988, giving us roots that are 30+ years deep.
But it’s not just longevity that sets us apart — it’s our world-class curriculum. Informed by leading early education research, our Balanced Learning® approach equips children with the skills and character traits they need to be the successful leaders of tomorrow.
We’ve studied student outcomes and found that Primrose students are better prepared for learning and life. Our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students consistently demonstrate a high attainment of school readiness concepts, including scoring significantly higher than their peers in math and literacy as demonstrated through the GOLD™ assessment system.
Primrose provides significant support to its Franchise Owners — we help with everything from site selection and the construction process to training, marketing, staffing and more. The strength of our business is directly tied to the success of our Franchise Owners, so it’s important we make sure they are supported throughout the journey. Size & Growth
We welcomed 33 schools last year and plan to open more every year. All told, we have nearly 375 schools in the U.S., and we expect that number to keep rising as more people experience the Primrose brand. Many of our Franchise Owners come to us through their previous association with our schools- as parents, grandparents or students. At the same time, we’re also seeing increased interest from seasoned franchise owners in other business sectors and multi-unit operators who see a proven avenue for entrepreneurial expansion.
Cost & Fees
As part of its due diligence to determine the 2018 Franchise 500 Ranking, Entrepreneur also reviewed every part of the financial investment that goes into becoming a Primrose Franchise Owner. Given our ranking of no. 1 in the child care industry and no. 27 overall, it’s clear that an investment with Primrose provides a life-changing return for our stakeholders.
High-performers attract other high-performers. I’m proud to be surrounded by high-achieving Franchise Owners and their teachers and staff who commit themselves to service excellence every day. I’m also fortunate to work with a National Support Center team that is always striving toward innovation and continuous improvement. I look forward to welcoming new Primrose business owners who share our values and commitment to excellence; together we will stay in the winners’ circle for many years to come.
